Course Description
This course will teach you about epilepsy and seizures, including what epilepsy is, causes, triggers, symptoms and the different treatment options. You will learn about the effects that epilepsy can have on a child or young person’s development and functioning, as well as how to support individuals living with the condition.
The course outlines the different responses to different types of seizures, how to recognise an emergency situation and how to support an individual after a seizure. It contains downloadable resources to help with recording seizures and identifying any patterns or potential triggers. By the end of this training, you will also be aware of the relevant legislation and associated legal responsibilities.

Module 1: What is Epilepsy?
What is epilepsy, epilepsy in children and young people, causes of epilepsy, epilepsy terminology, classes of epilepsy, fighting stigma and epilepsy and the law.
Module 2: Understanding Epilepsy and Seizures
Classes of seizures, triggers of seizures, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment.
Module 3: Providing Support During a Seizure
How to respond to a seizure, how to recognise an emergency situation, recording a seizure and support after the event.
Module 4: Impact on Development and Functioning
Learning difficulties, memory, processing difficulties, effects of medication, injuries and falls, sleep and mood and behaviour.
Module 5: Supporting Those with Epilepsy
Talking about epilepsy, managing risks, risk assessments, individual healthcare plans (IHPs), education, health and care plans (EHCPs) and working together.

The online assessment is taken on completion of the training material. You will be asked 20 multiple choice questions with a pass mark of 80%. The answers are marked automatically, so you will instantly know whether you have passed. If you don't pass, don't worry. You can take the test as many times as you need – with no extra charge.
